With the arrival of spring also comes the presence of bees as this is their most active period. But if you find a swarm of unwelcomed bees, there are several steps you can take.

First of all, do not disturb any hive that you encounter. Contact an exterminator to move the bees safely.

If you run into bees, do not panic. Avoid flailing your arms. Instead, retreat from the area calmly. If you do have to run, protect your face and eyes with your hands and arms until you reach a building or car. Thick brush and water will not provide adequate protection.

If you do get a bee sting, find a safe area and then remove the stinger as soon as possible using your fingernails or credit card. Clean the area with soap and water and apply ice for a few minutes to reduce pain and swelling.

If you have multiple stings or are allergic to stings, seek medical attention right away. If you witness a person or pet being stung by bees or having breathing or vision problems, call 9-1-1 immediately.
