The Cochise County Planning & Zoning Commission has unanimously approved a rezoning application by the Development Services Department to use a vacant 11.87-acre residential property as a commercial truck terminal.
Trucks crossing the international border will be able to use the terminal on East Merritt Avenue in Douglas as a storage area.
This project will require that “four mobile homes occupying the west side of the property be removed after the current residents have left.” The commission also stipulated that there be a designated truck route put in place to prevent trucks from crossing a bridge along North Sulphur Avenue because of safety concerns.
There will also be weight restriction signs installed as well as an in-depth evaluation of safety risks.
Following the approval by the commission, the rezoning application was sent to the Board of Supervisors for final approval on Feb. 27.
