The First Marines Division will mark the ninth year of its annual Veterans Day parade in Bullhead City this month and has nominated 90-year-old World War II Veteran Lindy Arthur Closset to serve as the grand marshal.

Closset is the first American born son to German immigrant parents in Long Island, New York, and will serve as the 2017 grand marshal for the parade, according to a press release.

Closset was named after Charles Lindburg and was born on the day New York City held Lindburg’s ticker-tape parade in celebration of his transatlantic flight, the release said.

Upon graduation from High School, Closset enlisted in the Merchant Marines in 1944 and served at the helm of a ship that was coming into the New York harbor when the Empire State Building was hit by a B-25 aircraft in July of 1945. Closset also served in the U.S. Army and because he spoke fluent German was assigned to supervise German prisoners who were brought to Camp Carson in Colorado Springs.

Closset, who graduated from Denver University, went on to work in New York with Bill Gates and later worked for Boeing Industries before his retirement.

The Bullhead City Veterans Day parade, which is spearheaded by First Marines Division member Paul Walsh, a Korean War veteran, will take place at 10 a.m. Nov. 4.
