The Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce has asked Congress to develop an immigration solution in light of President Donald Trump’s recent decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

“Deporting 800,000 kids is not a reasonable solution to a much more complicated issue,” the president and CEO of the Phoenix Chamber, Todd Sanders, was quoted as saying. “Since the president has set the table here, we echo the call to Congress to start working immediately to craft an immigration solution within the president’s timeline which will allow these children to realize their full potential as contributing members to the country.”

Sanders also told radio station KJZZ that he would have preferred to see a more “nuanced” decision that “didn’t really play a game of chicken with kids.”

The decision to stop accepting applications to the program was announced Sept. 5. Those with permits that expire before March 5 will be able to renew them if they apply before Oct. 5.

There are an estimated 700,000 recipients of DACA and the chamber said there were 28,000 DACA participants in Arizona.  

The Phoenix Chamber is the voice of 2,400 businesses in the region, and the organization says DACA participants in the state have contributed to the economic success of Arizona.
