Bidding is underway for the engineering, design and construction of a new Tucson Electric Power (TEP) natural gas generator to help the company provide electric service and expand its renewable energy efforts.

TEP has issued the request for proposals (RFP) for the new facility, which will be on the company’s 344-acre Irvington Campus near East Irvington Road and South Alvernon Way, according to a press release.

Bids are due Oct. 2, and the chosen bidder will be announced in November.

The new facility will house 10 flexible, fast-responding, natural gas reciprocating internal combustion engines, according to TEP’s press release announcement. The engines will be designed with a combined capacity of up to 200 megawatts, half of which TEP aims to bring online by mid-2019. The company said it plans to have the remaining half of the engines in service by the mid-2021.

“The addition of these efficient natural gas resources will help us to preserve safe, reliable and affordable service for customers as our community continues to expand its reliance on renewable energy,” TEP’s President and CEO David Hutchens said in a statement.

According to the company, almost 11 percent of the power it delivered last year to retail customers came from renewable sources. TEP says it plans to have at least 30 percent of its power from renewable resources by 2030, which would double the state of Arizona’s 2025 goal.
