More than half of registered voters feel the need to have their device with them on vacation is more important than potential cybersecurity risks, according to a recent survey.

A University of Phoenix survey found that 55 percent of respondents said they had to have their mobile device with them during summer travel.

About half of those check their device once every hour, according to the study. Yet many fail to take precautions against the security risks. Only 40 percent indicated they hid their device and 39 percent had up-to-date antivirus software. In addition, less than a quarter of respondents changed their passwords.

“Vacations are often a time when we let our guard down, which can leave us vulnerable to hackers who want to steal personal information,” Kirsten Hoyt, academic dean of the College of Information Systems & Technology at the University of Phoenix said in a press release. “Whether you are in another country or down the street, it is important for people to take precautionary measures when traveling this summer.”

The survey also found that 41 percent of travelers post vacation photos on their social media sites while they are away. At least half of those surveyed reported they felt that using their phone on holidays was as safe as at home, and 68 percent said they felt more secure using their phone’s hotspot over public Wi-Fi.
