An Arizona program that offers work to homeless individuals has plans to expand.

The Tucson Homeless Work program began six months ago but has already been successful at helping 17 people find housing, according to a press release.

This month, the program will expand to offer three work days to those involved. It will also welcome two more partners: Sister Jose Women’s Center and Pima Animal Care Center. The partnerships will increase the number of people and animals the program can help.

Tucson Homeless Work was designed to be a one-year trial program, the release states. Since it started, 166 homeless workers have been involved. They have cleaned over 55 miles of roadways, picking up about 37,000 pounds in garbage.

The program provides $10 per hour cash for those who participate, and those who participate can only be involved twice a month.

“I think it is a great program,” David Medrano said. “It gives people an opportunity to progress in their life. I am glad that the city and all the agencies are coming together and thinking about homelessness and addressing it.”

It was initiated following contributions by the city of Tucson, Pima County and HSL Properties.
