Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) has issued a statement praising the proposed regulations announced by the Department of Education, which will ensure that federal funds offered through Title I of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) will supplement -- and not supplant -- state and local funds.

“I am glad to see the Department of Education proposing a regulation to ensure Title I funds will be used to supplement state and local funds in public education,” Grijalva said.

The congressman pointed out that data from the U.S. Census Bureau show that Arizona spends less than $8,000 per student in state funding toward public schools.

"It is a sad indictment that, too often, we provide so little for the education of children who are so much in need," he said. "The ESSA has tremendous potential to help our kids learn, but its success is dependent on how well each state implements it. We must stop short-changing our children’s futures, and that starts by implementing Supplement-not-Supplant rule proposed this week.”

The Every Student Succeeds Act, a bipartisan bill designed to revise some issues with the No Child Left Behind Act, was signed by President Barack Obama last December.
