U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) issued a congratulatory statement honoring U.S. Olympic athletes, especially those from Arizona.
“Congratulations to all of the Americans who reached the pinnacle of athletic excellence by competing in the 2016 Olympic Games," McCain said.
He went on to specifically mention Arizona's athletes.
"We are especially proud of the extraordinary athletes living or training in Arizona for their determination and commitment, which continues to inspire our nation," McCain said. "From the most decorated Olympic athlete in history, Michael Phelps, who trains and will soon coach at ASU (Arizona State University), to Sam Dorman from Tempe, who took home the silver in synchronized diving, to Helen Maroulis who trains in Tempe and claimed the first-ever gold medal for USA in women’s wrestling, to Alex Naddour from Gilbert, the first American male in 32 years to medal in the pommel horse – each and every athlete representing our great state and nation has made us proud."
