Arizona Public Service (APS) said Monday that work crews are busy replacing 155 power poles and fixing the power grid after last week's powerful storms.

During the worst part of the storm, more than 26,000 APS customers were without power, 90 percent of whom had power restored within the first 12 hours.

By 8:30 p.m. Friday, high winds and heavy rain pummeled the Phoenix-metro area, knocking  down 155 power poles in the West Valley.

“Storm damage like this is on par with the worst we’ve seen in the past five years,” APS General Manager of Transmission and Distribution Operations Jacob Tetlow said. “Our focus is to quickly and safely restore power to our customers, and our crews have worked around the clock since Friday evening to get the lights back on.”

“We know monsoon season will bring powerful storms that damage our equipment and knock power out for customers,” Tetlow said. “We want our customers to know that as these storms roll in, we are working to ensure their safety, restore power and communicate restoration status as soon as possible. That’s our commitment to our customers - we serve the public - and we’re ready to do it again.”
