Jose Luis Carrera Sr., board of directors chairman for Chandler-based First Credit Union (FCU), died June 2 at age 83.

Carrera served on the board since 2001 and was vice chairman from 2010 until 2012, when he was named chairman. During his years of volunteer service, he completed all available Credit Union National Association’s Volunteer Achievement and Leadership Education programs.

Carrera also helped the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. He was instrumental in getting First Credit Union involved with the program by hosting VITA sites at its branches.

Carrera served in the Air Force and retired from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where he specialized in financial and accounting methodology cases. A native of El Paso, Texas, he earned his undergraduate degree from Texas Western College and graduate degree from Inter-American University of Puerto Rico.

Carrera was a member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife Lucy Galvan Carrera, their children Jos L. Carrera Jr. and Juan Luis Carrera, daughters-in-law Erlinda G. Carrera and Molly Rausch Carrera, and grandsons Jose L. Carrera III and Andres L. Carrera.
