Hearts, homes and health initiatives will thrive in Arizona with $40,000 in 2016 POWER Grants recently distributed to nine regional agencies courtesy of Trico Electric Cooperative Inc., a nonprofit serving more than 38,000 customers in northwest Tucson.

Grants were awarded to several emergency, financial and behavioral support assistance programs, repair and household goods providers, and other organizations focused on reaching out to needy Arizona families.

The Arivaca Helping Hearts program, which dispenses food, formula, financial help and fuel, was awarded $2,000; Arizona Youth Partnership, a holistic self-sufficiency group, was allotted $3,000; while Green Valley Assistance Services garnered $3,500 to aid its emergency financial help program.

Five organizations were granted $5,000 apiece: Aviva Children’s Services, Mentally Ill Kids in Distress, MUSD Student Services Department, Sahuarita Food Bank and United Community Center.

Community Home Repair Projects of Arizona, which sends repair technicians on site for emergencies, was awarded $6,500.

Since 2008, the cooperative has bestowed more than $300,000 to nonprofit groups delivering vital services and necessities such as food and clothing, health care and education programs. Each year, Trico encourages tax-exempt organizations within its service area to apply for the Power grants in amounts up to $10,000. The awards are made for one year and allotted by competition.
