In a recent initiative, the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) has unveiled a Model Policy and Infographic aimed at tackling Non-Consensual Intimate Imagery (NCII) in K-12 schools. The policy is designed to address concerns identified through surveys conducted by CDT in 2024, which highlighted the prevalence of deepfakes and NCII among public high school students, parents, and teachers.
The research indicated significant gaps in current school capabilities to handle NCII issues, particularly in educating students, preventing incidents, and supporting victims. To address these challenges, CDT convened a task force comprising diverse stakeholders to develop a comprehensive Model NCII Policy for K-12 schools.
This policy outlines the offense of sharing NCII and defines the school's role when such incidents occur within its community. It also promotes awareness of reporting mechanisms and supportive measures for those affected by NCII. Furthermore, it provides customizable language that schools can integrate into existing policies related to Title IX, bullying/harassment, or digital citizenship.
Additionally, CDT has produced an infographic designed to prevent the distribution of NCII and support its victims. This resource includes tips and information about deepfake NCII and can be used as a poster or handout or shared digitally.
