Today, President Donald Trump announced upcoming trade enforcement actions against Brazil. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) has been directed to start a Section 301 investigation into digital trade barriers in Brazil that affect U.S. digital exports.
The Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA) has pointed out several barriers to digital trade in Brazil in their comments for the 2025 National Trade Estimate report.
CCIA President & CEO Matt Schruers stated, "CCIA welcomes the attention of the administration toward Brazil’s barriers to U.S. digital exports through a deliberative Section 301 investigation into the harms caused by discriminatory treatment." He further noted that "Burdensome tariff regimes for U.S. exports to the country, and proposals for discriminatory platform regulations and network usage fees all threaten U.S. competitiveness." Schruers emphasized the importance of this market due to its growth potential for investments in the digital economy, expressing hope that these actions will bring relief for industry operations in Brazil and restore open and fair trade between both nations.
