The fediverse, a global network of interconnected social media servers, is becoming more accessible to users of Threads. By enabling sharing to the fediverse on Threads, users can view posts from other servers and have their own posts shared across these platforms.
Threads has introduced a new search feature and a dedicated fediverse feed. These additions allow users to discover content from outside the Threads platform. If sharing to the fediverse is enabled, users can see posts from federated users they follow that originate from different apps or servers.
This update means that if someone you follow shares a post on Mastodon and it’s shared to the fediverse, it will appear in your Threads feed alongside other fediverse content. Currently connected servers include Mastodon, Bookwyrm, WriteFreely, among others. Content in this feed appears in reverse chronological order.
Users can now search for specific fediverse profiles directly within Threads. For instance, by searching for a WordPress blogger's federated profile, you can interact with their posts directly on Threads.
These features aim to facilitate community building and perspective exchange across platforms. According to Threads: "These two new features will help you find your community and exchange perspectives with others, no matter what platform they’re on."
Over the past year since integrating with the fediverse, Threads has made significant progress in interoperability. Initially launched for public profiles in select countries last March and expanded globally (excluding Europe) by June 2024, over 75% of all fediverse servers have interacted with Threads since then.
Threads continues its commitment to responsibly grow the fediverse while ensuring a safe community environment: "Our goal remains to grow the fediverse responsibly... We’ll continue to collaborate with developers and policymakers."
