Despite the increasing availability of electric vehicle (EV) models, a recent survey by AAA reveals that American consumers remain hesitant to adopt this technology. According to the survey, only 16% of U.S. adults are "very likely" or "likely" to consider an EV for their next vehicle purchase, marking the lowest level of interest recorded since 2019. In contrast, those who are "unlikely" or "very unlikely" to purchase an EV rose from 51% to 63%, the highest level since 2022.

The survey identifies several barriers preventing wider adoption of EVs. High battery repair costs (62%) and purchase price (59%) were among the most significant concerns for potential buyers. Other issues include doubts about the suitability of EVs for long-distance travel (57%), a lack of convenient public charging stations (56%), and fears of running out of charge while driving (55%). Safety concerns were cited by 31% of those undecided or unlikely to buy an EV, while 27% reported challenges with installing home charging stations. Additionally, 12% mentioned potential reductions in tax credits and rebates as a concern.

Gas prices played a role in shifting consumer interest towards EVs in 2022 when they reached $5 per gallon. However, current gas prices have stabilized between $3.00 and $3.50 per gallon, which may affect motivations related to cost savings. Despite this change, respondents continue to cite gas savings, environmental benefits, and lower maintenance costs as primary reasons for considering EVs.

The outlook on the future prevalence of EVs has become more pessimistic among U.S. drivers. The belief that most cars will be electric within ten years dropped significantly from 40% in 2022 to just 23% this year. Interest in taking advantage of tax credits and rebates has also declined from last year's figures.

AAA suggests that hybrid or plug-in hybrid vehicles might appeal more to consumers by combining traditional internal combustion engines with electric power, thereby reducing range anxiety while offering an environmentally friendly alternative.

The survey was conducted from March 6-10, 2025, using a probability-based panel representative of the U.S. household population. It included interviews with 1,128 adults aged 18 or older and has a margin of error of +/-4%.
