World Human Milk Donation Day, observed on May 19, highlights the significance of human milk donation to non-profit milk banks globally. Chris Smith, a clinical nurse at OhioHealth Mothers’ Milk Bank, emphasized the growing need for pasteurized human milk and donors to meet this demand. "By sharing the word about donor milk, more moms are made aware of the existence of non-profit milk banks and the need for donated human milk," Smith stated.

Human milk offers immunological benefits that protect infants from infections and conditions like necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Even after pasteurization, donor milk retains these protective factors. Smith noted that spreading awareness is crucial for non-profit milk banks to continue providing safe, pasteurized human milk to vulnerable infants who cannot receive their mother's milk.

Michelle Gauntner, an OhioHealth associate and mother, recounted her experience with the Mothers’ Milk Bank. During her pregnancy with her first child Declan, she developed preeclampsia requiring extended hospital care. "I was scared... I know 'too much' and simultaneously NOT enough," Gauntner said.

Gauntner's son Declan faced health challenges after birth and required additional care at Nationwide Children’s Hospital due to a renal infarct from a blood clot sustained in utero. Declan struggled with feeding complications, leading Gauntner to seek help from lactation consultants. Despite efforts, she could not produce enough milk for him.

The introduction to Mothers’ Milk Bank brought relief to Gauntner. "Receiving milk was the ultimate gift, saving us both in a way," she shared. The donated milk provided essential nutrition for Declan as he recovered in the NICU.

"Their devotion, expert knowledge and passion for the community are a rare blend you don’t see every day," Gauntner praised those involved with the Milk Bank. She expressed gratitude for their role in her son's recovery and encouraged others to consider how they can contribute similarly.
