The Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT), along with over 20 organizations and companies, has urged Congress to provide full funding for the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) request. The additional funding is intended to support advancements in AI research, standards, and testing.

For more than a century, NIST has been recognized as a leader in developing technical standards and promoting innovation. Its expertise in measurement science and technology positions it well to lead federal efforts addressing the challenges posed by AI systems.

Investing in NIST's scientific capabilities to assess AI systems' capabilities, limitations, and risks is seen as crucial for protecting the public from potential harm.
