In 2024, the United States experienced significant hurricane activity, with five major hurricanes impacting more than a dozen states. The storms left behind widespread destruction from Texas to Michigan. State Farm reported over 200,000 damage claims related to these hurricanes, distributing more than $1.9 billion to aid customers in recovery and rebuilding efforts.
The official hurricane season began on June 1 and saw Hurricane Beryl emerge as the earliest Category 5 storm on record. The season extended into October with Hurricanes Helene and Milton affecting the east coast. Damage was not confined to coastal areas; many inland states faced flooding, wind damage, and power outages, highlighting that severe weather risks are not limited to traditional hurricane-prone regions.
Hurricane Beryl alone resulted in over 33,000 claims primarily from Texas. Later in the year, Hurricanes Helene and Milton led to more than 166,000 claims predominantly in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Florida. Other storms like Francine and Debby also impacted several states throughout the year.
State Farm managed nearly one million catastrophe claims in 2024—the highest volume recorded in the past decade—demonstrating their commitment to supporting customers during challenging times.
As the new hurricane season approaches this June, State Farm advises residents to prepare by meeting with insurance agents to review coverage options. Creating or updating home inventories and establishing disaster plans are recommended steps for enhancing readiness.
"Readiness plays a critical role in resilience," State Farm emphasizes. "Small steps today can make a meaningful difference tomorrow."
