Following the recent election victory for Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberal Party, the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) has issued a statement. Lawrence Zhang, head of policy at ITIF’s Centre for Canadian Innovation and Competitiveness (CCIC), extended congratulations to the Prime Minister and his party.
The statement notes that the 2025 Liberal platform is designed to address a convergence of challenges including global instability, protectionism, and gaps in domestic capacity. The platform emphasizes strengthening the Canadian economy to be more self-reliant. The strategy includes commitments to enhancing domestic industrial strength, supporting high-growth firms, and securing technological leadership.
Lawrence Zhang remarked on the importance of focusing on outcomes. "Raising business investment, scaling Canadian firms globally, accelerating R&D commercialization, and ensuring Canada’s industrial policies deliver a measurable global advantage will all be not just critical to meet the moment, but mandatory," Zhang stated.
The CCIC highlighted the necessity for Canada to gain capacity alongside making policy announcements. Competitiveness should be a key criterion in evaluating every program, regulation, and investment. The CCIC expressed its commitment to working with the new government to help Canada withstand external pressures and aim to emerge as a leading industrial economy.
