The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) has expressed its approval following the recent passage of the bipartisan TAKE IT DOWN Act by the House of Representatives. ITIF's statement was delivered by Policy Analyst Alex Ambrose, who recognized the significance of this legislative move.
Ambrose stated, "The TAKE IT DOWN Act is an important step forward that will help people pursue justice when they are victims of non-consensual intimate imagery, including deepfake images generated using AI. All Americans deserve protection from this type of abuse, and this law will make it a crime."
He further highlighted the growing threat posed by maliciously created explicit deepfakes, which jeopardize both reputation and safety. "Unfortunately, it is easier than ever for malicious people to create explicit deepfakes that threaten someone’s reputation and safety. As the technology advances, it will become increasingly difficult to identify fake images. Congressional action was essential to address this problem," Ambrose explained.
In addition, he welcomed the Act for its role in curtailing the distribution of sexually exploitative material, while ensuring that it does not limit access to other legal online content. "The TAKE IT DOWN Act is particularly welcome because it will reduce the spread of both real and fake material that is sexually exploitative without infringing on anyone’s right to access other lawful content online," he said.
