In Princeton, Illinois, Betsy Rowland's West Bureau Farms is pioneering the use of autonomous tractors in agriculture. Over the last four seasons, she has employed an 8R 410 tractor and a 2600VT tillage tool on her 8,000-acre farm to cultivate corn and soybeans. This innovation has brought significant benefits to her farming operations.

With global food demand rising due to population growth from 8 billion to nearly 10 billion by 2050, farmers like Betsy are crucial in meeting this need. The autonomous tractor enables more efficient land management. "When you think about it, that's a lot of ground to cover. The tractor makes it manageable," Betsy states.

The average farmer is over the age of 58 and often overwhelmed with tasks. For Betsy, the autonomous tractor frees up workers for other essential duties while handling routine work. "It's amazing how much more we can get done," she remarks.

The technology also impacts Betsy's personal life positively. With her husband managing another business, the tractor allows them to maintain productivity without exhaustion. "We're getting our time, health, and sanity back," Betsy notes.

A memorable moment for Betsy was waking up to find a field completed overnight by the tractor. "I woke up, and the field was done. It's like having an extra set of hands that never gets tired," she shares.

West Bureau Farms has been at the forefront of technological adoption since the early 2000s. The John Deere Operations Center is integral to their setup: "Operations Center mobile is how we start running the tractor autonomously. It sends phone notifications if the tractor stops or has any issues," says Betsy.

This technology integration helps monitor progress and ensure safety while increasing crop yields primarily through new seed traits. "Being able to remotely monitor so many things has given us additional peace of mind and limits trips back and forth to check things," explains Betsy.
