OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital has achieved a significant milestone by reaching its 100th placenta donation through the Lifeline of Ohio’s Placenta Donation Program. Since the program's inception on September 19, 2023, these donations have led to the creation of over 2,500 healing grafts for patients in need.
Each placenta donated, which would otherwise be discarded, can produce approximately 25 healing grafts. These grafts are utilized in various medical procedures including eye, oral, and spine surgeries, as well as in treating challenging wounds like diabetic foot ulcers and burns.
Nicki Scott MSN RN, Director of Nursing at Mansfield Hospital, expressed pride in the collaboration with Lifeline of Ohio: “We’re proud to partner with Lifeline of Ohio to be able to empower our patients to give the gift of healing to others while bringing new life into the world.” She added that thanks to participant contributions, potentially thousands with unique medical needs have been helped and anticipates ongoing success for the program.
The Lifeline of Ohio Placenta Donation Program permits expectant mothers scheduled for C-section deliveries to donate their placenta along with the umbilical cord and amniotic membrane. The program is open to any expectant mother planning a C-section regardless of age. Notably, placenta donation does not alter any part of the delivery process and incurs no cost for donors. It is also distinct from cord blood donation.
