The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has released an analysis indicating that new distribution centers (DCs) with 4,000 workers significantly enhance local economies by creating jobs, expanding the labor force, and increasing wages. The report was published on February 4th.
According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, its updated analysis reflects the economic impact of distribution centers as they grow in size and technological complexity. A study conducted in 2022 found that a 3,000-worker DC could generate over 2,100 additional jobs and boost wages by $360 million annually in metropolitan areas. With the rise of e-commerce, DCs have expanded to meet demand, now requiring more skilled workers to manage advanced robotics and automation. In a new analysis, the Chamber examined the effects of larger, 4,000-worker DCs, reaffirming their significant role in job creation, wage growth, and local economic development.
In the Raleigh-Durham area, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce analysis showed that larger distribution centers resulted in the creation of 3,660 jobs with a growth of 1,999 in the labor force. There was also a $401 million annual increase in salaries and wages.
