In a recent meeting, students from every high school within Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) met with Interim Superintendent Shauna Murphy to discuss rising violence in schools. These students, selected by their principals, were given the opportunity to engage directly with District leadership on this pressing issue.
The meeting addressed various forms of violence affecting students both in person and online, including physical altercations and cyberbullying. William Johnson, School Community Partner Specialist for the District, stated, “This event was extremely necessary and impactful... But today, they spoke up, and their voices truly mattered.”
Students shared personal experiences and proposed solutions such as enhanced mental health support, conflict resolution programs, stronger anti-bullying measures, and proactive interventions against cyberbullying. Toyon Embry, a Senior at Taft High School said, “The student voices were heard today... We know what needs to happen, and we are ready to be part of it.”
Interim Superintendent Murphy expressed appreciation for the students' contributions and emphasized that their feedback would influence future initiatives to combat school violence. This meeting represents a significant step in CPS's efforts to address this issue. The District plans ongoing engagement with students, teachers, and parents as part of a comprehensive strategy to reduce school violence.
