Michelle Sands, Sleep Apnea Director of Silent Night Therapy, stated that sleep apnea can lead to fertility issues if not detected and treated correctly.

"Sleep apnea can even affect fertility," said Sands.

Sleep apnea, a common yet serious sleep disorder, has far-reaching implications beyond just disturbed sleep, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Research indicates that it can adversely affect fertility, particularly in men. Studies have shown that men with sleep apnea often experience hormonal imbalances, such as reduced testosterone levels, which play a crucial role in reproductive health. Low testosterone can lead to decreased libido and sperm production, thereby impairing fertility. Addressing sleep apnea can help restore hormonal balance and improve reproductive outcomes.

Sleep apnea can also lead to obesity, a known risk factor for infertility. A study published in the journal Obesity emphasizes the importance of weight management in mitigating the adverse effects of sleep apnea on reproductive health. Men with sleep apnea are often found to have higher body mass indices (BMI), and obesity can contribute to erectile dysfunction and reduced sperm quality. The correlation between sleep apnea, obesity, and fertility issues highlights the interconnected nature of these health problems.

"Sleep Apnea can also affect fertility. Evidence from recent studies indicates that sleep disorders can lead to increased oxidative stress which then contributes to increased DNA fragmentation. Increased levels of DNA fragmentation can cause infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, or recurrent IVF failures," said Sands.

According to research in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, sleep apnea has a significant impact on overall health and lifestyle. Poor sleep quality and chronic fatigue can reduce physical activity and lead to unhealthy lifestyle choices, further exacerbating fertility problems. The research indicates that men who treat their sleep apnea with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy often see improvements in their energy levels, mood, and overall health, which can positively influence their reproductive health. Addressing sleep apnea through medical intervention and lifestyle changes can thus play a significant role in improving fertility outcomes.

According to the Silent Night Therapy website, Sands entered the practice in 2011, bringing with her over 25 years of experience as a Registered Dental Hygienist. Currently, she holds the position of Sleep Apnea Director. She is recognized for her commitment to help and listen, prioritizing patient care over any product sales and recognizing that everyone has a unique story.
