Sydney Al-Lateef, a twelve-year-old with a vibrant personality and a love for performing arts, has been named the 2024 Nicklaus Youth Spirit Award recipient. Despite her youthful age, Sydney has already showcased her talents in poetry and performance on television and radio programs.
However, Sydney's journey has not been without its challenges. Born prematurely, she was diagnosed with hyperbilirubinemia as an infant—a condition that causes jaundice. During her first year of life, Sydney experienced growth delays resulting in a diagnosis of short stature without any known scientific cause.
At the age of four, Sydney developed a persistent cold along with several other conditions affecting her appearance and behavior. Seeking answers, her parents took her to Nationwide Children’s Hospital Urgent Care where she was subsequently transferred to the main hospital. There, Sydney was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease—a rare condition causing inflammation in blood vessels throughout the body.
With limited visitor access due to Sydney being on the infectious disease floor and having a new baby sibling at home, her parents relied heavily on their faith during this difficult time. "We were given the best care, level of treatment, and guidance that would guarantee her a long and healthy life," said Tiffany, Sydney's mother. She expressed gratitude towards Dr. Amponsah who provided invaluable assistance during this period.
Following treatment for Kawasaki disease, Sydney's health improved significantly—her temperature and blood pressure normalized and her lively personality resurfaced. A follow-up cardiology appointment two years later revealed no evidence of damage to Sydney’s heart.
The 14th annual Legends Luncheon presented by Nationwide celebrated Sydney's brave spirit and perseverance by announcing her as the 2024 Nicklaus Youth Spirit Award recipient—an honor bestowed upon patient champions who have demonstrated strength and positivity in adversity.
Upon receiving the award, Sydney expressed her desire to give back: “I started thinking about how I could pay it forward...the way that [Nationwide Children’s Hospital] helped me, makes me want to go out and help others, too, in any way that I can.”
Ramon Jones, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Nationwide, commended Sydney's resilience. "Hearing her story of compassionate care and recovery embodies what the Nicklaus Youth Spirit Award stands for," he said.
The 2024 Legends Luncheon raised $1.43 million, contributing to a 14-year total of nearly $15 million. All proceeds directly benefit the young patients and families served by Nationwide Children’s Hospital each day.
