Sponsored Content- New York City Uber driver Princess Monteiro said she can drive for Uber around her kids' school schedule, and she likes the flexibility.
That flexibility allows her to be home when her children get home and help them with their homework.
"I start at like 8:30 a.m. after I drop off my oldest daughter at school,” Monteiro said. “I head home around two o'clock to make sure that I beat traffic and I'm there for them when they get home. Sometimes I'll go out in the evening if someone is available to (watch) the kids for me.”
“On the weekends, you know, I have lots of support, so I work on the weekends as much as possible... I just need to be flexible,” Monteiro said. “I work really around the school schedule, and I like to do their homework with them and stuff like that."
Many Uber drivers and other flexible workers enjoy flexibility and being able to establish their own schedules, according to Flexible Work News. A recent survey among approximately 100 flexible workers found that "freedom" (36.2%), was the No. 1 response given for what gig workers enjoyed about their jobs. Finances came in second (25.5%), followed by schedule (24.5%), and personal reasons (13.8%).
A 2021 report from Harvard's Business School showed that 76% of the 808 respondents to a survey said that flexibility was extremely important to them, while 69% highly valued the opportunity to bring in extra income. Of those respondents, 10% said that a decrease of flexibility would be the equivalent of taking a 15% pay cut.
The number of customers who use Uber surged from 93 million in 2020 to 118 million in 2021, according to Business of Apps. Uber drivers provided more than 6 billion trips in 2021, for an average of more than 17 million trips per day. More than 5 million people around the world worked as Uber drivers in 2021.
