More than 24% of Indiana hospitals received top grades for health care safety this fall from the nonprofit Leapfrog Group, the 32nd highest percentage among the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
More than 2,900 acute-care hospitals in the United States were evaluated this fall by Leapfrog and given letter grades – the largest number of hospitals ever assigned such grades. The safety grades measure 30 patient care components in order to highlight each hospital’s efforts to protect patients on criteria such as from preventable injury, medical errors, infections and post-operative sepsis, according to Leapfrog.
In Indiana, the share of hospitals earning “A” grades in the spring of 2021 was 21.4%, and the state’s national ranking in the spring was 35th.
Nationwide this fall, 32% of hospitals earned “A” grades; 26 percent collected “B’s”; 35 percent, “C’s”; 7 percent, “D’s”; and 1 percent, “F’s.”
The Leapfrog methodology has been peer-reviewed and aims to encourage hospitals to prioritize patient safety, the analysis states.
