Earlier this year, the ACLU and others filed a lawsuit against Intuit and HireVue. The suit alleges that their artificial-intelligence-enabled software unjustly prevented a deaf employee from being promoted due to her disability.

Last year, the Department of Justice reached a settlement with schools in Pasco County, Florida. This was over claims that threat assessment technology used by the district discriminated against students with disabilities, leading to suspensions and law enforcement referrals based on disability-related behaviors.

Nearly a decade ago, Legal Aid of Arkansas sued the state. They argued that an algorithm determining hours of in-home care for people with disabilities violated their due process rights by unfairly reducing care hours.

Saturday marks the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. These examples highlight how emerging technologies like AI tools and algorithmic systems can pose risks to people with disabilities.
