Linda Moore President and CEO at TechNet | Official website

TechNet, a bipartisan network of innovation economy leaders, has addressed misconceptions regarding the proposed pause on state AI development laws. This pause is being considered by Congress as part of a reconciliation package.

Linda Moore, TechNet President and CEO, stated, “AI is actively reshaping how we teach, build, learn, and live. A unified federal AI framework would not only provide clarity and consistency but also affirm America’s global leadership in shaping the rules of the road for this defining technology.” She added that the pause allows lawmakers to develop a national framework balancing innovation with accountability.

Addressing concerns about state powers under a national AI law, TechNet clarified that both states and the federal government can still protect children and consumers online. The pause does not hinder states from enforcing consumer protection laws related to child safety, data privacy, anti-discrimination, and anti-deceptive practices.

TechNet also countered claims that the pause benefits large tech companies at the expense of smaller ones. According to their statement, small companies benefit more from avoiding a complex 50-state regulatory environment. A clear national policy helps level the playing field for small and midsize startups by reducing compliance costs.

Finally, TechNet cited polling data indicating broad public support for a single national AI standard over varying state laws. Their poll with Morning Consult showed 76% of voters favoring one national standard.

More insights from Linda Moore are available through further analysis provided by TechNet.
