As European leaders gather in Brussels to address the bloc's competitive challenges, there is a growing call from the digital sector to delay the implementation of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act. The request comes as crucial provisions, particularly those concerning General-Purpose AI (GPAI) models, remain incomplete with deadlines looming.

The European Commission faces criticism for potentially missing these deadlines, which could impact its ambitious goal of a €3.4 trillion economic boost from AI by 2030. A rushed rollout is feared to jeopardize Europe's AI development and competitiveness.

Various national governments and Members of the European Parliament have joined voices with CCIA Europe in urging EU leaders to reconsider the current timeline for implementing the AI Act. They emphasize that postponing the implementation is necessary until a comprehensive framework is established.

CCIA Europe advocates for immediate action, suggesting that EU leaders instruct the Commission to revise its timeline to ensure effective enactment of the AI Act. Such an intervention would provide legal certainty for AI developers while waiting for essential standards.

Daniel Friedlaender, Senior Vice President & Head of Office at CCIA Europe, stated: “Europe cannot lead on AI with one foot on the brake. With critical parts of the AI Act still missing just weeks before rules kick in, we need a pause to get the Act right, or risk stalling innovation altogether.”

Boniface de Champris, Senior Policy Manager at CCIA Europe, added: “If the EU is serious about turning its €3.4 trillion AI promise into reality, it must act now. Reflecting growing concerns among governments and AI innovators, the Commission should be instructed to pause and simplify – giving companies a fair shot to comply and compete.”

The push for a delay aims to complete the legal framework adequately and offer companies sufficient time to adjust and comply with new regulations without hindering GPAI development within the EU.
