Sens. Marsha Blackburn and Richard Blumenthal, along with other lawmakers, are set to reintroduce the Open App Markets Act (OAMA). This legislation aims to compel online app stores to relax their safety criteria and restrict the capacity of companies to manage hate speech and misinformation through their terms of service.

The Computer & Communications Industry Association, which has been promoting a competitive tech industry for over 50 years, is closely monitoring this development. The association's Vice President of Federal Affairs, Brian McMillan, expressed concerns about the potential impact of OAMA on digital security measures.

"Bad actors pose an enduring threat to the users of digital goods and services," McMillan stated. "Businesses need flexibility to perform security, trust, and safety operations. OAMA would interfere with these efforts by limiting digital ecosystems’ ability to respond to content or ban apps that don’t meet their privacy or safety requirements."
