ADM has inaugurated a new research and development center in Rolle, Switzerland, focusing on animal microbiomes. The facility is located at the Biopôle life science campus near Lausanne and spans 1,600 square meters. ADM's scientists will conduct pre-clinical research to address health challenges using biotics and fermentation-derived ingredients for pets, livestock, and aquaculture.
Dr. Nuria Miquel, Senior Vice President and Chief Science Officer at ADM, stated: "We are seeing significant growth in the global pet and farm animal microbiome market, as farmers and pet owners alike seek science-backed nutrition solutions to support the health and well-being of their pets and livestock. We are proud to launch this state-of-the-art research and development center, uniquely dedicated to microbiome research for pet and farm animal health and well-being, with the flexibility to adapt to emerging research demands."
The center aims to enhance understanding of the gut microbiome's role in animal health. It builds on ADM's existing work in human and animal nutrition by developing science-backed microbiome solutions for market introduction.
The global biotics in animal feed market was valued at $5.2 billion in 2024. The gut microbiome influences immune, digestive, and absorptive functions affecting protein production across species. Producers increasingly use functional feed additives to optimize performance efficiency.
Pet owners also show interest in microbiome-supporting solutions for their companions' longevity. According to a survey conducted in 22 countries, 84% of pet owners expressed interest in products that could extend their pets' lifespan. ADM R&D uses its global network to study pre-, pro-, and postbiotics effects on pet well-being.
Recent clinical trials have shown various benefits of postbiotics for pets: supporting healthy blood sugar levels in adult dogs, maintaining intestinal health during diet changes in cats, promoting healthy teeth and gums in dogs, and aiding skin health maintenance.
ADM continues its mission of advancing animal wellness through scientific innovation while providing extensive resources for both human and animal nutrition globally.
