The 2024 Bank of America Chicago Marathon has made a significant contribution to the local economy, injecting $683 million into the Chicago Metropolitan Area. This figure represents a 22% increase from the previous year, as reported by Jones & Associates Economics.

The marathon's growing national and international profile attracted nearly 53,000 participants in 2024. There was a notable rise in out-of-state participation, with a 130% increase in runners and visitors from outside Illinois and the Midwest compared to 2023. The influx of visitors boosted spending on accommodations, food, retail, and transportation. As a result, the tourism sector experienced over $177 million in economic activity due to the race.

Kristen Reynolds, President and CEO of Choose Chicago, emphasized the event's significance: "Reaching nearly $700 million in impact in 2024, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon is one of Chicago’s most vital events to bolster tourism and showcase our great city to the world."

In terms of employment, the marathon supported 4,589 full-time jobs in 2024—a 24% increase over the previous year—contributing $229 million in wages and salaries.

Rita Cook, President of Bank of America Chicago, expressed gratitude for all those involved: "On behalf of BofA, we’d like to thank the dedicated runners who raised a record-breaking $36 million to support worldwide charities close to their hearts."

Carey Pinkowski, Executive Race Director for the marathon, highlighted its broader impact: “From elite runners setting world records to a global community of enthusiastic spectators...the true essence of the marathon lies in the enduring community and competitive atmosphere it creates.”

Bank of America's involvement extends beyond this event; its partnerships with marathons like those in Chicago and Boston generated nearly $1.2 billion combined economic impact across both cities last year.

The upcoming 47th Bank of America Chicago Marathon will take place on October 12 at Grant Park. For further details about participating or supporting this event, interested parties can visit chicagomarathon.com.
