TechNet, a national network of technology leaders, has called on Congress to consider gig economy workers in legislation that would exempt tipped income from federal taxes. In correspondence addressed to the House Ways & Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee, Carl Holshouser, Executive Vice President of TechNet, emphasized the significance of gig workers to the U.S. economy.
Holshouser stated, "Gig workers are not just a convenience—they are essential to the American economy. They help with childcare, provide safe transportation, deliver meals and goods to families, and offer personalized services and short-term rentals that support local communities. Gig workers make up more than a third of the American workforce and they deserve tax fairness."
According to TechNet's letter, nearly 60 million Americans engage in gig work through technology platforms. These individuals often rely on customer tips as a crucial part of their income. Unlike traditional employees who might have expenses covered by employers, gig workers frequently manage their own business costs.
"As Congress considers exempting tips from income taxation," Holshouser continued, "TechNet urges lawmakers not to leave behind gig workers who power the modern service economy."
