Barbara Schmenk, an oncology advisor at OhioHealth and a seasoned professional with 25 years of experience, faced a new challenge when she was diagnosed with breast cancer last summer. Transitioning from caregiver to patient, Schmenk shared her journey toward recovery, focusing on the shift in her role and the personal growth she experienced.

Schmenk recounted the initial shock of the diagnosis, stating, "I’ve been exposed to the cancer care processes and have been working with cancer patients for more than 25 years — but I was still shocked to be diagnosed with breast cancer last summer." Following her annual mammogram, she underwent additional testing that confirmed the diagnosis. Her journey through surgeries, radiation, and hormone therapies was arduous. "Persistence and commitment to my care required a lot of patience," she reflected.

A critical aspect of her recovery was learning to trust those providing her care. Schmenk, known for her scientific approach to life, acknowledged, "I did not know that I could trust so many others to guide me through my journey." Surrendering control, she relied on medical professionals and their expertise.

Opening up about her challenges was another significant learning curve. She described how sharing her feelings enhanced her care: "In this, I found that the more I shared about how I was feeling physically and emotionally, the more my care could center around that."

Her professional background did not exempt her from realizing the need for help: "My biggest learning: I learned that my professional experience as an oncology physical therapist did not mean I should be my own." By seeking assistance from other professionals, she focused more effectively on her recovery.

Celebrating her recovery proved to be both complicated and rewarding. Reflecting on her progress, she expressed that despite ongoing treatments, she is cancer-free and feels more like herself. In her words, "I am a survivor."
