The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is reminding private nonprofit organizations in Puerto Rico of the approaching deadline to apply for federal disaster loans. These loans aim to mitigate economic losses caused by severe weather events from April 29 to May 10, 2024. Eligible organizations must submit their applications by April 23, 2025.
The affected areas include Adjuntas, Guánica, Lajas, Las Marìas, Luquillo, Maricao, Naranjito, Orocovis, Sàbana Grande, San Sebastìan, Toa Alta, Utuado and Yauco. The SBA's Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program offers financial support to nonprofits providing non-critical services such as food kitchens and community centers.
These loans are intended for working capital needs resulting from the disaster and are available even if there was no physical damage. The funds can be used for various expenses including fixed debts and payroll.
“SBA loans help eligible small businesses cover operating expenses after a disaster," stated Chris Stallings of the SBA's Office of Disaster Recovery and Resilience. "These loans not only help business owners get back on their feet but also play a key role in sustaining local economies in the aftermath of a disaster.”
Loan amounts can reach up to $2 million with interest rates starting at 3.25% over terms extending up to 30 years. Interest accrual and payments begin one year after the first disbursement.
Applications can be submitted online at sba.gov/disaster or by contacting SBA’s Customer Service Center. For those with hearing or speech disabilities, telecommunications relay services are available by dialing 7-1-1.
The final date for submitting economic injury applications is April 23, 2025.
