Metro has announced the name and design for its upcoming Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Hamilton County. The service, named Metro Rapid, is set to provide a new transit option designed for efficiency and speed.

The Metro Rapid vehicles will be 60 feet long, accommodating more passengers than average buses. These articulated vehicles are designed to navigate the region's terrain effectively. During February, Metro tested various BRT vehicle types and showcased the new branding.

Metro CEO Darryl Haley commented on the significance of BRT: “You’ve probably heard the term ‘game-changer’ used to describe BRT, and there’s a simple reason: Quite frankly, it’s true.” He noted that other cities have seen benefits such as faster rider experiences and economic growth with BRT systems. The introduction of this modern transit solution is eagerly anticipated in Greater Cincinnati.

Scheduled to debut in 2028 along Reading Road and Hamilton Avenue, the corridors were chosen through community engagement. Public input has been vital throughout the design phase, influencing decisions on corridor locations, station design, and infrastructure. Community feedback and insights from Metro’s Strategic Transit Engagement to Expand Ridership (STEER) customer advisory committee played a crucial role in selecting the Metro Rapid name and design.

BRT will feature innovations such as dedicated bus lanes, traffic signal priority, level boarding platforms, and off-vehicle ticket machines to ensure peak efficiency. Haley emphasized that “BRT offers all the benefits of light rail, but on rubber tires.”
