The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has issued a reminder to private nonprofit organizations in New Mexico about the approaching deadline for applying for federal disaster loans. These loans aim to alleviate economic losses caused by fires and flooding between June 17 and August 20, 2024. The application deadline is set for April 11, 2025.

The disaster declaration encompasses Lincoln, Otero, Rio Arriba, and San Juan counties, along with the Mescalero Apache Tribe. Under this declaration, SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program is accessible to private nonprofits offering non-critical governmental services that experienced financial setbacks due to the disaster. Eligible organizations include food kitchens, homeless shelters, museums, libraries, community centers, schools, and colleges.

These EIDLs provide working capital support even if no physical damage occurred. The funds can be used for fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable, and other unpaid bills resulting from the disaster.

"SBA loans help eligible small businesses and private nonprofits cover operating expenses after a disaster," said Chris Stallings of the SBA's Office of Disaster Recovery and Resilience. "These loans not only help business owners get back on their feet but also play a key role in sustaining local economies in the aftermath of a disaster."

Interest rates may be as low as 3.25%, with repayment terms extending up to 30 years. Interest does not accrue nor are payments required until one year after the first loan disbursement. Loan amounts and terms are determined based on each applicant’s financial condition.

For online applications or more information on SBA disaster assistance programs, visit sba.gov/disaster or contact SBA’s Customer Service Center at (800) 659-2955 or email disastercustomerservice@sba.gov. Telecommunications relay services can be accessed by dialing 7-1-1 for those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Applications must be submitted by April 11, 2025.
