John Fubka, a resident of Washington, D.C., has raised questions about the relevance of the slogan "no justice, no peace" in the context of restaurant unionization efforts. His statement was made on X (formerly Twitter) on January 31.
"What does "no justice no peace" have to do with forming a restaurant union," said Fubka, DC Resident.
Fubka's post referred to ongoing protests organized by DC Restaurant Workers Rising against Knightsbridge Restaurant Group. These demonstrations took place outside Rasika on January 30, 2025, with workers and allies alleging union busting and labor law violations.
A study by the National Bureau of Economic Research analyzed the effects of unionization on businesses. It found that unionized establishments experienced a 6% decrease in payroll and a 4% reduction in employment compared to non-unionized counterparts. Additionally, the probability of establishment closure increased by 3% following unionization.
Union decertification is described as a legal process allowing employees to remove a union as their exclusive bargaining representative. This enables workers to negotiate employment terms directly with their employer rather than through a union. The National Labor Relations Board regulates decertification elections, ensuring they reflect employees' wishes.
According to ProjectionsInc, successful union decertification allows employees to negotiate directly with their employer, potentially leading to more flexible workplace agreements tailored to specific needs and preferences. In March 2022, workers at PowerVac in Detroit and Evonik-Porocel in Little Rock voted to decertify their unions for direct negotiations with management.
