AAA has projected that 19 million Americans will embark on ocean cruises in 2025, marking a 4.5% increase from the previous year when 18.2 million participated in cruise vacations. This growth signifies the third consecutive year of record-breaking cruise passenger volume. The cruise industry has shown a stronger recovery post-pandemic compared to other travel segments, with demand outpacing hotel demand over the past two years.

Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel, commented on this trend: “What we’re witnessing in the cruise industry is nothing short of amazing, but it’s no surprise.” She emphasized the appeal of cruise vacations for all ages and highlighted the convenience of having most vacation expenses prepaid.

The industry faced significant challenges during the 2020 pandemic but has since experienced a substantial rebound. In 2022, cruise volume reached 84% of its 2019 level and surged to new heights in 2023, nearly 20% above pre-pandemic levels. The forecast for 2025 suggests a further increase of 34% over 2019 figures.

A large majority of American cruisers are expected to head to sunny destinations this year. The Caribbean remains the top choice for U.S. passengers, with 72% opting for cruises there. Alaska and Mediterranean cruises account for smaller shares at 6% and 5%, respectively. The popularity of shorter Caribbean cruises is also rising, with itineraries ranging from two to five days now making up 18% of offerings.

Florida hosts the three busiest cruise ports globally: Miami, Port Canaveral, and Fort Lauderdale. Miami recently welcomed Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, while Port Canaveral is set to receive its sister ship, Star of the Seas.

AAA Travel offers several tips for those planning a cruise this year. It advises reserving activities early due to high demand and considering travel insurance as protection against potential disruptions. Travelers are encouraged to arrive at their port city ahead of departure to avoid flight-related stress and explore parking options if driving.

Additionally, downloading cruise line apps can streamline various aspects of the trip without requiring an internet package onboard. Passengers should familiarize themselves with prohibited items before packing and consider bringing essentials like sunscreen from home.

For those enjoying their current voyage, booking future trips onboard may offer special promotions and benefits through travel agents back home.

The forecast by Tourism Economics was developed in partnership with AAA using scheduled itineraries from major vessels and economic outlooks within the travel sector.
