Chinese ownership of U.S. land and assets has been a growing concern, especially when considering that China owns over $2 billion in American farmland.
Blake Masters, who is running for the U.S. Senate from Arizona, took aim at Chinese nationals owning homes and farmland in the United States in a video he posted to Twitter on Wednesday.
"I think we should ban Chinese nationals from owning residential real estate and farmland, for that matter," he said in the video. He also asked a more far-reaching question: "Why are the Chinese buying up all the farmland in this country?"
In the text of his tweet, Masters said, "That is not a good future my friends."
Arizona state law restricts foreign ownership of U.S. agricultural land, a 2021 report from the Congressional Research Service said. But the same report found that as of 2019, foreign holdings of agricultural land in Arizona was between 250,001 and 500,000 acres.
Masters is not the only person who is questioning Chinese ownership of U.S. assets, a recent Fox News report said. Tucker Carlson noted in a recent video segment that the Chinese have increasingly been buying U.S. farmland, now owning "more than $2 billion worth of farmland in the United States."
Carlson was joined by U.S. Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA 4th District) in the video segment.
"I've got legislation that I think would go a long way to stopping China from starting an agricultural monopoly in the United States of America," Newhouse said in the video. "I want to preclude the Communist Chinese Government from purchasing agricultural assets in the United States of America."
"In 2019, foreign persons and entities held an interest in 2.7% of U.S. privately owned agricultural land — covering crop, grazing and forest land — according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)," the Congressional Research Service report said.
