U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas plans to revoke Title 42, a border policy put in place by the Biden administration, but some Arizona Democrats are among those warning of an influx of migrants.
Originally enacted by former President Donald Trump, the purpose of Title 42 was to stop the spread of COVID-19 by stopping the flow of immigrants across the U.S./Mexico border, but on March 29, the members of the Texas Congressional Delegation wrote a letter to Mayorkas and Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, warning of the dangers should Title 42 be removed.
“We understand that this legal authority is temporary and tied to the COVID-19 public health emergency, but DHS appears unprepared to handle a likely unprecedented increase in apprehensions along the southwest border,” the delegates wrote.
According to a story by the New York Post, Title 42 will end May 23, on the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Officials estimated that the policy has been used to expel migrants more than 1.7 million times.
Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) addressed the House of Representatives on March 30 to speak on the importance of Title 42, saying that Mayorkas has a "constitutional duty to defend the border of the United States" in keeping the policy in place.
Roy also tweeted that that scraping Title 42 would "cause massive injury to migrants, cartels empowered, Americans endangered, fentanyl pouring across our border."
Arizona Democrats Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly have written a letter to President Joe Biden, asking him not to end Title 42 border restrictions without developing a plan to secure the southern border.
"Given the impacts that changes to Title 42 could have on border communities, border security and migrants, we urge your administration not to make any changes to Title 42 implementation until you are completely ready to execute and coordinate a comprehensive plan that ensures a secure, orderly and humane process at the border," the senators wrote.
Data revealed in early March states that in the first half of the month there were approximately 97,000 border crossings, with Title 42 allowing for the expulsion of 51% of them.
DHS is bracing for as many as 18,000 migrants a day at the southern border if Title 42 is revoked, according to ABC News.
