Boom Supersonic, an aviation company that produces supersonic commercial airliners, will bring a manufacturing and final assembly facility to Greensboro, creating more than 1,750 jobs by 2030.

The project is expected to bring an investment of over $500 million through 2030 to a site located at the Piedmont Triad International Airport in Guilford County.

The deal was announced on Jan. 26, and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said in a tweet the following week that the company would help transition the state "toward a clean-energy economy and transform sustainable air travel across the country."

"It is both poetic and logical that Boom Supersonic would choose the state that's first in flight for its first manufacturing plant," Cooper said in a recent press release issued by his office. "Like the success of the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk, this innovative company will succeed by transforming passenger air travel with speed and sustainable energy."

"Named one of Time's Best Inventions of 2021, the Boom XB-1 demonstrator aircraft rolled out in 2020, and its carbon-neutral flight test program is underway," the release said. "The company's manufacturing plant in North Carolina, called the Overture Superfactory at Piedmont Triad International Airport, will house the company's first final assembly line, test facility and customer delivery center."

Boom's investment is expected to grow the state’s economy by at least $32.3 billion over the next 20 years, which is the time period when a supporting High-Yield Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) could be active, the release said. Using a formula with the expected new tax revenues generated by the 1,761 new jobs, and accounting for an investment of $500 million by Boom, the JDIG agreement will authorize a potential reimbursement to the company of as much as $87.2 million, paid over a 20-year period.
