Sinus problems aren't always confined to the sinuses, said Dr. John Ditto of Richmond Breathe Free Sinus and Allergy Centers.

They can also cause headaches and tooth pain, the physician said.

"You have sinuses behind your cheeks, next to your eyes, and you have a sinus way in the back in the center of where the nose meets the back of the throat," he said. "It's called the sphenoid sinus. You can get infections, or obstruction of those sinuses and they can cause pain."

Sinus pain can also occur because of migraine headaches, Ditto said.

"You can have unilateral facial pain due to the other forms of headache," he said. "And so, the challenge is to differentiate between what's a migraine headache and what's a sinus pain, and sometimes the two overlap."

Allergies are sometimes the cause of sinus infections, Ditto explained.

"So, by treating the allergy you decrease the inflammation," he said. "You can maintain sinus openings so that they drain effectively and reduce recurrent and chronic sinusitis."

Sometimes, what patients believe are sinus headaches are actually migraines, according to WebMD. Both may get worse when you bend forward, The Mayo Clinic said. Migraines can also be accompanied by nasal symptoms, it said.

"Because the treatment you need depends on what kind of headache you have, it’s important to figure out if your symptoms are caused by your sinuses," WebMd said. "If a sinus blockage, such as an infection, really is the cause, you'll likely have a fever."

Richmond Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Center has provided a quiz to determine what kind of sinus problems you might have.
