The share of Indiana hospitals earning “A” grades for patient safety this fall from the nonprofit Leapfrog Group stood at 18.64 percent, the 41st highest percentage among the 50 states.
More than 2,600 acute-care hospitals in the United States are graded twice annually by Leapfrog and assigned letter grades. The safety grades measure 27 patient care components in order to highlight each hospital’s efforts to protect patients from preventable injury, medical errors and infections, according to Leapfrog.
In Indiana, the share of hospitals earning “A” grades a year ago was 16.67 percent, and the state’s national ranking for 2019 was 41st.
Nationwide, just over one-third of hospitals earned “A” grades; 24 percent collected “B’s”; 35 percent, “C’s”; 7 percent, “D’s”; and 1 percent, “F’s.”
The Leapfrog methodology has been peer-reviewed and aims to encourage hospitals to prioritize patient safety, the analysis states.
