Pima County issued the following announcement on Aug. 24.

On Aug. 24, the Pima County Elections Department released its 2018 Security Plan, which details the internal processes taken to ensure the security and integrity of the election process.

Elections has had a Security Plan in place since 2007, though it was mainly for internal use to ensure employees follow security protocols. While always a public record, this is the first time the county has made the document available on its website. The plan does not reveal any information that could be used to compromise voting software or hardware.

The Elections Department conducts all federal, state and local elections in Pima County. It’s important for the public to know the systems, processes and policies the department follows to maintain a secure election process.

“Although the topic of election security may be new to the public, election administrators throughout the State of Arizona and the Country have long focused on making certain that elections are secure and the results accurate,” Pima County Elections Director Brad Nelson said. “The Security Plan that Pima County is making public today will hopefully provide the voters in Pima County with greater confidence that their vote is secure.”

The plan features specific information on the type of software used to count ballots, the logic and accuracy tests performed prior to ballot tabulation, the security of the voting equipment, the building’s infrastructure design and access, and more.
