A 1,400-square-foot facility used in the '80s and '90s for gem shows is set to be a new events center, campground and community gathering place near Douglas.
The facility will be able to host weddings, corporate retreats and similar special events. The events area will also add buildings to house a portrait studio and media room, as well as cabins and tepees, restrooms and shower facilities.
“I bought the property 18 months ago,” project applicant David Verdugo said. “I think we will be doing something good for the community, and eventually we want to shift the focus to benefit children with community arts programs, and education so they can learn how to grow their own food.”
While the project faced some opposition citing concerns about property values, Verdugo believes there will be a positive impact from his project. As a result, the Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously voted for the approval of his application.
“I love Cochise County," Verdugo said. "It’s a very special place… People want to come here because it’s a beautiful place, and we’re helping to spread the word."
