With an effective tax rate of 0.9 percent, Indiana has the 28th highest tax rate among U.S. states and the District of Columbia, according to an ATTOM Data Solutions analysis of property taxes levied on single-family homes.
The data shows Indiana has 2 million single-family homes with an average estimated value of more than $156,000. The average tax amount is just over $1,400. The effective tax rate is the percentage of a home's value the owner pays in property taxes.
New Jersey, Illinois, Vermont, Texas, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania have the highest effective tax rates – all above 2 percent. Twenty-four states have effective tax rates below 1 percent.
New Jersey homeowners pay an effective tax rate of 2.28 percent, ranking it the highest in the U.S. Indiana homeowners pay 61 percent less than they would in New Jersey.
